'A Minecraft Movie' Dominates Weak 'Snow White' Among New PVOD Releases
A little-remembered 2018 Mark Wahlberg film is currently #1 at Netflix.
The relatively early (39 day window) for “A Minecraft Movie,” the top Western studio film of 2025 so far, paid off as expected with #1 rankings on both iTunes’ and Fandango’s top 10 VOD movie charts this week.
The $416 million U.S./Canada grosser ($928 million worldwide, great though less than half of year’s best “Ne Zha 2” from China), was still #4 in theaters over the weekend. Parallel to its home release, it dropped only 22%, the smallest amount among any top 10 holdover.
“Snow White” (Disney) was the sole other major new entry this week. The disappointing (only $87 million U.S./Canada total) release had a longer (53 day) window, which likely didn’t help elevate interest. More likely a burden was Disney’s decision to price this as a $24.99 rental, rather than the standard $19.99.
That helped its position (#2) at Fandango, which calculates by revenue. But the impact was clear at iTunes, ranking by transactions. It is currently #6 there, after getting no higher than fifth earlier in the week.
It’s hard not to guess that between a mediocre response to the film, its Disney label (indeed the official title is “Disney’s Snow White) guaranteeing early streaming, and the premium price a lot of potential renters said, uh, no, we’ll watch “Minecraft” again.
Netflix saw two wholesome fairly recent theatrical releases sandwich two of the streamer’s originals for first and fourth place currently after their addition to their offerings over the weekend. “Instant Family” with Mark Wahlberg is currently #1, while the faith-based music biopic “I Still Believe” is #4. In between are last week’s two two films, their home grown comedy “Nonnas” with four veteran actresses and Vince Vaughn second after placing first most of the week, and the documentary “A Deadly American Marriage” third.
The VOD top 10s otherwise are fairly consistent otherwise. “Warfare” (A24), “A Working Man” (Amazon MGM, just reduced to $9.99), and “Captain America: Brave New World” (Disney, finally lowered to $19.99) are in the top five of both lists, in the same order on each.
Of note is ahead of its sequel’s release this week, “Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning” (Paramount), renting for $3.99, ranks #7 at iTunes.
One new Netflix original made the top 10 this week. From their ongoing documentary series “Untold,” “The Liver King” debuted at #3 during the week, and is currently #9.
