For 5th Straight Week, Warner Bros. Leads VOD (with 'Bloodlines';) 'The Intern' #1 at Netflix Over KPop Cartoon
"Friendship" and "Fight or Flight" also place on initial week at home.
‘Final Destination Bloodlines” (Warner Bros.)
“Final Destination Bloodlines” (Warner Bros.), the studio’s third consecutive $100 million+ grossing release, debuted at home last Tuesday. It displaced their “Sinners” after its two #1 weeks, which followed two from “A Minecraft Movie.”
Ryan Coogler’s film is #2 at both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue). “Minecraft” is seventh at both, with all three having 48 hour rentals for $19.99.
Remember comedies? Nancy Myers was one of the best directors of them a decade ago before studios shifted gears. “The Intern” from 2015 popped up today a #1 at Netflix (it was added Sunday). It also was a WB release, giving them a clean sweep of all three charts.
“Friendship” (A24), a rare contemporary comedy, is #5 at both iTunes today and Fandango for the week. “Fight or Flight’ (Vertical), a conventional war film with Josh Hartnet that a minor theatrical release in early May has #6 at both charts.
The week saw some strong interest in older films. Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later,” renting for $3.99 is #3 at iTunes at the moment, and #7 at Fandango, very unusual for a low-cost entry. “Jaws” marking its 50th anniversary is currently #3 at iTunes ($3.99).
Before “The Intern” entered in first place today, the thriller “Plane” led the Netflix chart for four days, with the animated original feature “KPop Demon Hunter” (produced by Columbia) #1 Friday and Saturday. The film involves an all-girl Korean group who are masking their true calling pursuing demons.
Tyler Perry’s “Straw” and two entries from their “Trainwreck” documentary franchise round up the originals in the current top 10.
