Original Sci-Actioner 'War Machine' Leads Netflix, 'Shelter' & 'Zootopia 2' Top VOD
Dearth of top new films sees holdovers do well at home.
‘War Machine’ (Netflix)
“War Machine,” a hybrid war/science fiction film made in Australia, raced ahead of multiple “Jurassic World” films from Universal this weekend to take over the #1 spot on Netflix’s U.S. top 10 movie chart. On VOD, with only some minor genre films debuting, previous #1 spot holders “Shelter” (Blackbear) and “Zootopia 2” (Disney) split the lead at the moment at iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue).
“War Machine” has a curious history. First developed by Lionsgate, with Patrick Hughes, the director of their “Expendables 3” and “The Hitman’s Bodyguard on board (he also wrote the script), it ended up being produced by Netflix. It stars Alan Richtson (“Aquaman” on TV’s “Smallville”) and Stephan James (the lead of “If Beale Street Could Talk”) as two surviving soldiers in Afghanistan fighting for their lives against unseen mysterious forces.
“Shelter” remained #1 on Fandango’s list for a second week, while “Zootopia 2” regained that position at iTunes this weekend. “Shelter” led iTunes for much of the week, but has dropped to #4 currently there.
Both lists share high positions for “Zootopia” (it’s second for the week at Fandango), but other than “The Housemaid” being in the top five of both, they diverge somewhat. “The Strangers: Chapter 3” (Lionsgate) is #4 at Fandango, “Marty Supreme” fourth at iTunes, but neither film made the other’s top 10.
Also new this week, two independent genre films with minimal theatrical releases made both lists lower down. “Cold Storage” (Goldwyn), a bioterrorism comedy with an ensemble cast that includes Liam Neeson, Leslie Manville, and Vanessa Redgrave is seventh on both lists, while horror film “Whistle” (IFC) is #8 at iTunes, #9 at Fandango.
“Jurassic World Rebirth” was first at Netflix much of the week before “War Machine” debuted, with three earlier franchise entries also on their top 10 all week. “Nuremberg” (Sony Pictures Classics) just came on, currently #3. Also new is “Harry Styles. One Night in Manchester,” which was only filmed on Friday night then debuted yesterday. “K-Pop Demon Hunters” is their third original on the top 10, returning after a week’s absence.
